The Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations in the nation. The Boy Scouts’ mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Scouting is a year-round program for boys ages 11-17.  Scouts can join the troop at any time throughout the year. It is not necessary to have been a Cub Scout to become a Boy Scout in Troop 83.

Troop activities, Troop Meeting Planning and Implementation, and Courts of Honor are lead by the Scout Patrol Leaders Council.

ACTIVITIES

Troop 83 conducts an outdoor activity every month of the year. Some activities consist of camping, hiking, backpacking, canoing, cycling, camporees, summer camp, or High Adventure trips to the Boy Scouts of America National venues such as Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

HISTORY

Troop 83 was chartered in 1926, which is the same year the city of Homewood was founded.

Dawson Baptist Church is named after its founding pastor, Dr. L.O. Dawson. His son, Lewis Dawson, was the Scoutmaster of Troop 83 when Dawson Church took over sponsorship in 1935.

Troop 83 is sponsored by the Dawson Family of  Faith and is part of the Dawson youth program.

Edgewood donated their town hall to the Boy Scouts in 1926. It was later referred to as the “Scout Hall.” Later on, Dawson purchased “Scout Hall.” The Dawson Sanctuary sits on the old location of “Scout Hall.”

For more information, please contact the Troop 83 Scoutmaster, Jim Henry, at (205) 516-0336.

Troop 83 meets every Monday night from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 1201 Irving Road.
